ESIS database - Statistical overview January 1999


EU Member States

The core of the ESIS Initiative is the Inventory of Information Society Projects. As of January 1st 1999, a total of 1943 completed questionnaires had been returned by the projects promoters (from EU Member States), entered in national databases and consolidated into the ESIS European database. Below, you will find a statistical overview of these projects.

Nb: An update campaign of the IS projects included in the ESIS 1 database (ie covering the 15 EU Member States) is in progress.

The ESIS " IS " definition used

IS projects use data processing and telecommunications technologies to support innovative methods of communication between members of society for a wide range of purposes: education and training, healthcare and social care, culture, administration, industry and commerce, research & development, etc.

Projects of this type will generally be:

interactive: two-way communication between users and systems or among users
and remote access: the users and systems are able to communicate over a distance

Projects may have a societal dimension or will possibly serve as a model for other organisations and businesses.
