Alternative Networks
Malta
Update Memo

The following report outlines new developments in the past three months and the state of on-going developments.

1. Introduction

No significant changes have been registered in the second quarter of year 2000 concerning alternative networks apart from the continuing developments in Cable TV infrastructure.

2. Cable TV

In the previous report, it has been stated that the company, Melita Cable TV Limited, is continuing with upgrading its infrastructure and that one would be expecting further developments in the coming months.

In fact, during May 2000, the company’s Chairman, stated that they are actively upgrading their ‘pipes’, when referring to the company’s optical and coaxial cable system, so that the network would be capable of handling two-way data communications. The company is preparing its network for interactive data services, including Internet access, so that when the time comes they would be in a better position to offer this kind of communication services on over its network. It was stated that about 75% of the infrastructure has already been completed.
