Alternative Networks
Syria
Update Memo

The following report outlines new developments in the past three months and the state of on-going developments.

Basically, there have not been any changes regarding alternative networks in Syria. All important sectors such as Telecommunications, Electricity, Water, Television, Railways are still under state monopoly. Currently there are no plans for any form of (partial) liberalisation in these sectors.

Moreover, no new companies, operators or services have emerged in the past quarter. There is a plan, however, to allow private Internet Service Providers to start getting licences from the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment (STE) during the first half of the year 2000 once an Internet backbone is set up.
