Key new elements, now available, on the ESIS Knowledge Base (http://www.ispo.cec.be/esis):

  • Two exclusive reports focusing on Information Society development in the 15 Member States of the European Union:

    • Public strategies for the Information Society

    • Information Society indicators

  • Two updated information packages concerning Information Society development in the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) and the Mediterranean:

    • Updated series of country reports and regional synthesis

    • Updated database of IS projects, promotional activities and key person contacts and organisations

The ESIS initiative is funded under the PROMISE programme of the Information Society Directorate General of the European Commission.

 

PUBLIC STRATEGIES FOR THE INFORMATION SOCIETY IN THE EU MEMBER STATES

 

The report provides an overview of Information Society strategies in the Member States and the implementation actions.

Some key points highlighted in the report :

The report involves a short introduction to the IS strategies being developed and implemented by the 15 Member States of the European Union. In addition, short national state-of-play overviews are provided. Also historical background information is provided through description of the main national milestones in IS strategy formulation. Clear web references have been provided for access to the original material.

 

The latest version (November 2000) includes full contributions from the EFTA/EEA countries, Norway and Iceland.

 

REPORT ON INFORMATION SOCIETY INDICATORS IN THE EU MEMBER STATES

 

This new report provides statistical analysis of the development over time of telecommunications and the Internet in the 15 Member States of the European Union. Statistical data and analysis are provided per country and for the area as a whole.

 

This has been achieved through the development of key indicators of information society development such as:

UPDATED REPORTS ON THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY IN THE CEEC AND THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA

 

Five series of updated reports are now available on the ESIS Web site (published in November 2000). They present the developments that have taken place between July and October 2000 on different aspects of the Information Society in the CEEC and the Mediterranean area.

 

Reports are presented by country, and regional synthesis. Key elements are:

UPDATED DATABASE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INFORMATION SOCIETY IN THE CEEC AND THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA

 

The ESIS database of Information Society projects, promotion activities and key person contacts and organisations has been updated to include new elements and improvement to existing entries. The database now contains 512 projects, 935 promotional activities (publications, conferences, calls for projects, expert groups, etc.) and 5 288 key person contacts and organisations.

 

ESIS PROJECT UNDERWAY IN SLOVAKIA

 

The ESIS project has been extended to cover Slovakia. Information on the development of the Information Society in the country will be available on the ESIS central Website in February 2001. For further information, please see the ESIS web site.

ESIS consists of:

Data collection is carried out in a decentralised manner through the ESIS network of contractors ensuring high quality research built on local knowledge, contacts and understanding. ESIS is funded under the PROMISE programme of the Information Society Directorate General of the European Commission with the support of an external project management team in charge of the co-ordination, data centralisation and synthesis, database and web management.
