Update January 2000: Cyprus

No significant changes have been recorded during the period from October to December 1999 in the local environment. The private sector, and more specifically, the banking industry still hold the lead in terms of the development and exploitation of IS projects. Nevertheless, several interesting projects are being undertaken by the Computer Science department of the University of Cyprus, whereas the Planning Bureau is involved in certain IS activities and events.

• Analytically, Mr. Costas Iacovou of the Planning Bureau was appointed earlier this year as the National Contact Point for the fifth framework of the EU.
  
• Dr. Antonis Kakas of the University of Cyprus (Computer Science department) was appointed as the National Contact Point for the Information Society of Technologies (IST) of the fifth framework of the EU.
  
• In parallel, Dr. Andreas Pitsillides of the University of Cyprus was appointed as one of the three Focal Points for the EUMEDIS initiative.
  
• Finally, the University of Cyprus along with the Institute of Technology are essentially coordinating the IT nodes initiative of the EU. More specifically,

• Mr. Marios Dikeouchos of the University of Cyprus is coordinating Domain 1 (multimedia and Internet) ;
• Mr. Andreas Michaelides of the Institute of Technology is coordinating Domain 2 (e-commerce) ;
• Mr. Skevos Evripidou of the University of Cyprus is coordinating Domain 3 (high performance computing) ;
• Mr. George Samaras of the University of Cyprus is coordinating Domain 4 (software quality) ;
• and Mr. Andreas Michaelides of the Institute of Technology is coordinating Domain 5 (business process re-engineering).
