Update July 2000: Algeria

Many personalities and organisations have been quite active over the last weeks for the promotion of ICTs, either through their participation in seminaries related to this field or through some decisions prone to the development of these prominent technologies and the information society.

• As stated in the previous report the status of the capital city Algiers has changed, it is now a wilaya instead of a Gouvernorat (super-capital). Following this change Mr. Abdelmalek Nourani Has been appointed as the Wali of Algiers.
• Mr. Mahieddine Ouhadj, President of the inter-ministerial commission in charge of the delivery of ISPs agreements at the ministry of Posts & Telecommunications (P&T). He has participated in many meetings connected to the information society and its new technologies. He recently has approved five new Internet providers, not operational yet.
• SAFEX is an economic (public) company whose main objective is the promotion of the national export rate , except hydrocarbon products. Its core activity is to handle and arrange economic shows and manifestations in Algeria or abroad.
• Mr. M. Ouarets is the Director of the department of transmission equipment at the ministry of P&T.
• Mr. S. Kennouche is at the technical responsible at King Line Computer, a company specialised in the construction of computers outfits.
• Mrs. N. Medebbeb is at the head of the editorial staff of the CDTA Bulletin (the CDTA is the Development Centre of Advanced Technologies), a staff mainly composed of researchers.
• Mr. Maamar Makraoui, Director of the Study and Research Centre on Telecommunications (CERT)
• Mr. Abdallah Nemer, General Director of ANEP-TD Algérie Internet, a new ISP.
• Following the council of ministers that took place on 1st June 2000, Mr. Ali Younsioui was appointed secretary general of the ministry of P&T.
