Update January 2000: Hungary

The end of the year has brought several changes concerning the main actors building the Information Society in the field of coordinating authorities, the informatical/telecommunication market and the print and other media as well.

The Inventra Ltd., currently owned by ten private entities, the publisher of index.hu that started its operation this May and which has become one of the most well known Internet portals, has established a shareholding company named Index.hu Informatics Shareholding Company. The managing director of the new company employing 40 staff members is Attila Reisz, the former executive director of Microsoft Hungary, one of the new owners of Index.hu Ltd. The chairman of the Shareholding Company is Ákos Korösi, majority owner of Inventra Ltd.

The general meeting of Informatics Arbitration Forum (Inforum) has elected a new leadership. The two-year mandate of the former leadership became due, so Tibor Gyurós, Ferenc Farkas and Péter Risztics abdicated. György Beck, representative of Informatics Enterprise Association (IVSZ), managing director of Compaq Computer Hungary Ltd. was elected chairman. Bálint Dömölki, representative of John von Neumann Computer Society (NJSZT), and Balázs Martos, chairman of Council of Hungarian Internet Providers were elected vice-presidents, while Péter Risztics, who is the representative of Inforum in the National Council for Communications and Informatics (NHIT) was re-elected as vice-president.

The directorate of PanTel Ltd. made a decision on some personal changes. From 15 November, Wouter Janssen will be the financial deputy-managing director as an accredited leader, instead of Jac Bergmans. Ronald Spithout will take over the post of the technical deputy-managing director from Geert van Eijk. Pál Horváth will remain the managing director of the Shareholding Company.

Sándor Krupanics, who had been the chairman and managing director of the Hungarian Post for a year, left his post on 1 November. István Lipp deputy-managing director was commissioned by Minister Kálmán Katona to take over the duties of the managing director for an indefinite period of time.

The vice presidential duties of the market regulation branch of the Communication Authority will be performed by Ferenc Bánhidi, one of the leaders of PanTel, from the middle of December 1999. The leader of the new telecommunication directorate is György Takács, who previously worked for Ericsson. Géza Gosztony, who came from Matáv PKI, performs the duties of the new number management office for the authority. János Gyursánszky, who also came from PKI, is responsible for the duties of the new quality and organisation development director for HIF.

Iván Andrassew, editor in chief of the online daily newspaper iNteRNeTTo sent in his resignation to István Bíró, executive director of IDG Hungary Ltd., and concluded an agreement with the leadership of Elender Online that he will perform the duties of an editor for EOL as a senior member. A four-member editor committee will direct the work of iNteRNeTTo until the assignment of the new leaders.

Bertalan Stampf became the leader of the representation of Lucent Business Partners Channels for the regions of Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. He is responsible for the marketing of Systimax cabling, mobile systems, data networks and services for corporate enterprises, passive components and small sub-exchanges of Lucent.
