The present quarter has been
marked by the creation of a National Council of
Information headed by Mr Nasser KANDIL.
The main objective behind the creation of that Council is the
organization of the television based information activity as
related to the country coverage through appropriate channels of
transmission. It is to be noted that the coming of digital
technology is posing a number of challenges that this Council
will have to cater for in collaboration with the acting companies
in this field.
As for the other aspects and
activities within the framework of the ESIS II project, the
following information can be reported concerning decision makers
in matters relating to the information society.
1. From the public sector:
- Dr Raymond KHOURY:
rkhoury@omsar.gov.lb : Presently Senior IT strategy
advisor at the Office of the Minister of Administrative
Reform. He is currently heading the commission created to
supervise the Y2K implementation plan and takes part to
all meetings with third parties negotiation IT matters
with the public Administration.
- Engineer Ali NAHLÉ:
anahle@bdl.gov.lb : Director of IT department at the Central
Bank. He is currently in charge of implementing a 2MB
network to link all branches of the Bank. He is leading a
Y2K task force for the financial system.
- Taline URNECHLIAN:
minister@economy.gov.lb: Miss URNECHLIAN is assistant to
the Minister of Economy and Industry Dr SAIDI. She has
been appointed by the Minister as facilitator for the
ESIS project in the public Administration.
2. From the private sector
- Dr Sami NSEIRI: Former
Dean of the faculty of Management at the Lebanese
University, he is now a consultant to the President of an
important bank in Beirut. He is the president of the
Professional Computing Association (PCA), an influential
body representing the community of hardware and software
IT dealers.
- Dr Antoine KAREH:
akareh@cis.com.lb :CEO of the company Computer Information
Systems which is the representative of World class brands
and especially Hewlett-Packard. CIS is presently
facilitating the use of PCs to university and school
students through a deal struck with a major bank in
Beirut (Byblos Bank) and an ISP (Data Management). CIS is
providing the hardware, Byblos bank is granting the
credit (up to 3 years installements) and the ISP is
providing the connection to Internet.
- Mr Maroun CHAMMAS:
mchammas@dm.net.lb : CEO of Data MAnagement SAL one of the
leading ISPs in Lebanon. Data Management has a
special deal with CIS and Byblos bank for a specified
category of customers. Data Management has launched
recently a Web portal that seems to be targeting a very
wide audience www.yalla.com.lb
- Cynthia GHOBRIL:
spcom@usj.edu.lb : Miss Ghobril is head of the publishing
and communication division at the Université
Saint-Joseph. This division is in charge of the
development and maintenance of the Internet site of the
whole institution. This site is being now extended and
will have a completely new content starting march 2000.
- Jalal FAWAZ:
jalal@act.com.lb : Mr FAWAZ is managing director of a
commercial and training organization in the IT
applications field. He is very active as vice-president
of the Professional Computing Association (PCA). He
launched many projects one of which is a portal intended
to link many web sites and encourage internet surfing and
e-commerce.
