Overview July 1999: Lithuania

On mid of 1998, Lithuania has reorganised its Ministry of Communication and Informatics, splitting it up into a Department of Information and Informatics , that operates under Ministry of Public Administration Reforms and Local Authorities, and a Department of Telecommunications that is part of the Ministry of Transport and Communications:

On May 25 1998, the Permanent Information Society Commission under Government was established with 9 members. Prof. Laimutis TELKSNYS was appointed as Chairman of the Commission. L.TELKSNYS is also Vice Chairman of Lithuania Science Council and Chairman of Lithuania Academic and Research Computer Network LITNET ((telksnys@ktl.mii.lt - 370 2 610460). The other 8 members are:

Mr Robertas TAMULEVICIUS is President of Infobalt Association. The Association consists of companies - major market operators and is the biggest non-commercial and non-governmental Lithuania structure in IT, telecommunications and office equipment areas.

Mr Evaldas PAULAUSKAS, Director of State Enterprise Infostruktura - operator of Governmental Institutions Computer Network VIKT. VIKT provides access to State Information Systems and is infrastructure for Information Systems of Local Authorities and Municipalities.
