Update July 2000: Algeria

For the second quarter of the year 2000 new technologies involved in the information society have been widely covered by numerous promotion activities that have been conducted in the capital city and in other regions of the country as well. The most prominent trend goes on towards encouraging this kind of meetings/actions devoted to ICTs for the sake of economic, scientific and social progress. The first step which goes in line with these activities have been presented during a scientific meeting where it has clearly been decided that the teaching of computer science at university will be compulsory from the next academic year on. Even some big hydrocarbon national companies (SONATRACH and SONELGAZ) are planning to sell their products via the Internet.

There have been various occasions for the authorities and operators to promote, encourage and introduce the information society to the widest possible range of people such as:

The First national Seminar on Distance Learning: It gathered a lot of teachers in order to discuss the new changes and challenges that ICTs has brought about in teaching techniques and methodologies.
