Overview July 1999: Lithuania

Information Society promotional actions, carried out in Lithuania, can be divided in:

conferences, seminars and other information exchange activities,
media publications, including radio and TV presentations,
networks, as infrastructure for Information Society,
organisations, supported the development of Information Society.

Information Technologies area and development of Information Society was never a one of Lithuania State priorities. The main goals of conferences and publications are the raising of awareness about the Information Society in first to politicians, making decisions, to business and general public. The promotional actions are initiated by different actors: Association INFOBALT, Lithuania Science Council, Computer Society, Universities, Lithuania Government and Seimas (Parliament). Four important events are planed in IV quarter 1999:

International conference Information Society '99,
Conference Information Society development problems in Lithuania,
Annual International IT, Telecommunications and Office Equipment Fair INFOBALT'99,
Computer Society Meeting, seminars and discussions on IS.

The Department of Information and Informatics is the main actor at Governmental level in promotion of Information Society. The Drafts of Information Society Program and legal acts are available on Internet for discussions and proposals.

Baltic IT review is an official quarterly Journal of the Information Technology Committee of the Baltic Council of Ministries. The Journal published official information on development of IT and Information Society, events, surveys and projects in all Baltic countries.

Lithuania newspapers Naujosios komunikacijos, Verslo zinios, Monitorius have permanent rubrics for Information Society. Lithuania National TV (RTV) holds weekly half-hour telebroadcast @ (Eta) on IT, Telecommunications and Information Society.

The main Networks infrastructure for development of IS are:

Lithuanian Academic and Research Computer Network LITNET,
Governmental Institutions Computer Network VIKT.

The development of Information Society is supported also by Lithuania Soros Foundation and Baltic IT Council.
