Update October 1999: Lithuania

1. Conferences and seminars

The annual Lithuania Academic and Research Computer Network LITNET meeting took place in Nida on 23-25 August 99. 32 Computer Networks administrators and IT specialists from all Universities and research centres participate the meeting. During the event IS surveying in Lithuania was widely presented to representatives of all high schools and Universities.

The Lithuania Computer Union's conference took place in Lithuania resort Birstonas on 16-18 September. More 400 participants (from Government, public organisations, IT&T companies, sciences and research centres, universities and schools) took part in discussions on the main topics of reports and discussions that cover the following subjects:

Information Society development problems,
Information Society in Lithuania: successes and obstacles,
Information technologies in schools (special one day discussions),
New projects, technologies and tools.

During the conference the ESIS project was widely presented.The conference proceedings, including ESIS presentation, were published in two books. All texts are in Lithuanian, in English - summary only (see section on "ESIS communication actions").

2. IS promotion actions in 1999

The main event of year 1999 is the 1st International Conference INFORMATION SOCIETY'99. The international conference will be launched by the association INFOBALT ( http://www.infobalt.lt ), under support of Lithuania Seimas and the Government and will take place in October 25-26 – in Vilnius, hotel Villon.
October 26-29, after conference INFORMATION SOCIETY'99, the largest IT&T trade fair in the Baltic States INFOBALT'99 take place in Vilnius. The fifth year INFOBALT event will introduce the most recent IT, Lithuanian information technologies and telecommunications market as well as the intellectual potential of Lithuanian and foreign partners.
1st information technologies and telecommunications CD catalogue ITT Lietuva 2000 is under preparation. Information about companies, products and services will be presented in CD. .
