Update January 2000: FYR Macedonia

Most of the public attention in the previous months was focused on the political stage - prolonged presidential elections, rearrangements in the Government made by ruling parties and end-of-year agreements on the association efforts of Republic of Macedonia to the EU.

A very important aspect of the last issue, directly related to both the vertical as well as horizontal assistance programmes from the EU to Macedonia, was the still uncertain outcome about the further participation of Macedonia in PHARE Programme. Our Government and the local EU envoy-office are awaiting the answer for this issue.

Despite the absence of a major promotional campaign and accompanying programmes, we have seen several very focussed and very competent promotional events, directly relevant for IS, and for the cross-border co-operation and assistance programmes.
