Update January 2000: Romania

New events related to the Information Society were identified. ESIS II Lot 11 Romania team participated at the most important ones in an effort to cover the main goals of the ESIS II Project.

Particularly interesting actions / initiatives

1. The sixth edition of International Fair for Information Technology and Office Organization, IFABO 1999

Already known as an event offering solutions, IFABO 1999 can be viewed from two different perspectives: by the general public and by the IT&C professionals. In addition to the last year programme, IFABO included "Business Day", on October 5^th, dedicated to business contacts. IFABO '99 Forum, organized by joining the efforts with the IT&C professional associations, was able to submit to the public attention challenging topics, such as:

• The state of art of software industry and information society
• Internet, as a governmental instrument
• Internet impact in insurance and banking industries
• Distance learning
• Latest solutions before Y2K

2. The Fourth International Conference on Information and Communications Technology in Public Administration (ICTPA ' 99) was held on 25-26-27 October. It was dedicated to using ITC in informatisations of public administration :

• The Best Achievements in applying the ICT policies and strategies in Public Administration:

• Public Administration Informatization - priority of process to building Information Society
• IT Dimensions of the current economic, social and political evolutions in Romania
• Towards the Global Information Society Europe facing its Enlargement
• Promotion of Romanian IT Projects Through the ESIS II Inventory

• projects and systems used in public administration (European and Romanian).

• The October 27 day was dedicated to seminars: ABDS for CEEC, Project Inco-Copernicus no. 977050 and PANEL-GI, Project Inco-Copernicus no. 977136

3. Binary ' 99, (National Exhibition for Software Production Evaluation)

Organized by: ARIES (Romanian Association of Software and Electronics Industries) in collaboration with Computer Department of "Politehnica" Bucharest University; National Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation; National Agency for Communication and Informatics; National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics. During the event 41 firms presented 76 products. After the exhibition ARIES edited a List of software products presents in exhibition.

4. Motorola Day,

"Motorola Day" is a yearly event, whose aim is to introduce to the present and potential clients and business partners the latest news in the telecommunications field, a very dynamic one. This year, "Motorola Day" is at its second edition, a complex event, held at Athenée Palace Hilton Bucharest. Among the newest and most interesting topics presented: Future of Telecommunications, Iridium - Satellite Communications, Mobile Applications, GPRS – Mobile Internet, ASPIRA, Multi-service Network. "Motorola Day" in Romania is an event included in the global strategy of long-term investments of the Company, once more pointing out and stressing upon the commitment made with the Romanian market.

5. Romanian Computer Show '99 (ROCS ' 99)

This year, ROCS'99 is at its 5^th edition, a complex event, during 3 days, held at Athenée Palace Hilton Bucharest and organised by IDG Romania

6. IMT-Day ' 99, December 15, 1999

The second edition of the IMT-day bring together presidents of Agencies, members of Romania Academy, General Managers of National Institutes, Ministries, and professionals. Special guest present at event: Prof. Dr. Eng. Lanyi Szabolcs, President of National Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation; Dumitru Prunariu, President of Spatial National Agency; Prof. Ionel Haiduc, Vice-president of Romanian Academy; At this event Prof. Dan Dascalu presented IMT activities during this year and the ESIS II Romania Project evolution and his importance for Romanian Information Society, the importance to participate in European projects. IMT- Press Conference, December 16

December 16 was dedicated to the presentation of ESIS II Romania Project evolution to mass media, represented by Tele 7 ABC television, Romania International broadcast, newspapers (Cotidianul, Curentul, Economistul, Univers Ingineresc), magazines (Electronica Aplicata, TEHNIUM) and ROMPRES (Romanian Press Agency).

Prof. Dan Dascalu launched the ESIS II-Romania Bulletin (in Romanian), an 8 pages publication. In this bulletin ESIS II Romania Project team present: Romanian Information Society and European Integration, the Information Society Promotion Office of the European Commission (ISPO) and his mission and objectives, the ESIS initiative (description of ESIS Project and a short presentation of the ESIS II), major events in Romanian Information Society (Consultative Board meeting, Press Conference before Kick-off ESIS II Romania, Symposium "Information Society and European Integration", the 3^rd JHLC meeting, etc).
