Update: Albania

During the quarter July-October 1999, 6 new Internet Service Providers have been established at an Internet Café, Internet Centers, etc. bringing the total number of ISPs to 31 in Albania. The number of web sites has increased by 25, 22 of which belong to private subjects, and 3 are public sites.

The number of organizations who provide Internet services free of charge to some special organizations will be reduced in future. The UNDP now has a limited license, and is therefore no longer able to provide such services free of charge. This is a result of competition in the WWW providers/Internet sector. Increased competition means that many private subjects or NGO-s are more attracted to private ISPs, and the number of ISPs will be increased over the next months. Currently, only the SOROS foundation provides Internet services free of charge, for a special category of institutions and organizations (NGOs, educational institutions, etc.).

An updated table of Web-sites in Albania is provided below.
