![]() Update: Cyprus |
Background:
After thoroughly
examining the available two sources (shown in the table below),
it was found that 63 Web sites were built by government and
private organizations falling within the pre-determined
categories, as against 33 sites found during the first reporting
phase (March - June 1999). The major differences lie in the areas
of primary and secondary schools (15 currently identified as
compared to 2), and of "Regional and Local Authorities"
(20 currently identified as compared to 3). The sharp increase
partially reflects the rapidly changing communications
environment, and more specifically, the sharp increase in the
incidence of ownership of personal computers and of the usage of
the Internet. The identified sites are broken down as follows :
15 primary and secondary schools, public and private. In addition to these, 12 web sites (not included in the attached table) have been developed by private educational institutions, mostly involved with IT issues. Overall, there are 27 web sites in these categories.
Most private colleges have developed at least one web site. In addition, the University of Cyprus has developed a web site. Overall, the total number of web sites of this category is 12. Of them, 10 were developed by private organizations, while the remainder belong to the University of Cyprus and to the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.
All 11 ministries have their own web sites.
In addition, a total of 20 local authorities (ministry departments, semi-government organizations) and municipalities were found to maintain a web site.Only one hospital (the governmental general hospital in Larnaca) has developed its web site. Finally, 4 web sites were found to belong to museums. These museums are either state organizations or are funded by the Church of Cyprus.
The relevant information was retrieved from the Internet and the state-controlled PIO (Press and Information Office).
