3. Main Trends and Developments
Little has changed in the web site environment in Egypt over the past year. By the end of the year 2000, a total of 265 web sites had been identified as being operable by the variety of public institutions as indicated in the tables below.
The majority of the sites belong to libraries and museums. health, culture, tourism, governorates, etc. as an integral part of Egypt’s "information highway", an initiative undertaken by the Information Decision and Support Center (IDSC), which comprises a number of sub-sites that serve in the various domains. This project plays an important role in linking the people to the main services and useful information of the country.
Specifically, the majority of web-sites belong to libraries and museums (41%), while 39% belong to regional authorities.
The number of web sites of high schools and universities stands at 33, amounting to 12% of the total sites. In fact, the High Schools and Universities Sector is the area which has seen the largest growth in terms of the share of the specific total population operating a web-site. Specifically, there has been more than a three-fold increase in the course of the past year, up from 2.2% in October 1999, to 7.2% at the end of the year 2000.
At a more general level, electronic commerce is claiming a significant role in Egypt, this role being continuously enhanced. Over 200,000 Internet users in Egypt are presently exposed to e-commerce; in addition, 57 private Internet service providers operate in the country. The Cainet annual conference series focus on Internet related issues, drawing more than 1200 attendees on average. A variety of topics are being discussed in the conference among which is e-commerce. In addition, the e-commerce committee of ISE has presented a white paper on establishing e-commerce in Egypt.
In total, Egypt has more than 4640 website under top-level domain (.eg) in many fields or subdomain. This service applied by about 57 ISP to about more than 300 thousand of Internet users.
Finally in an effort to reach 2 Million Web Users by 2001, Telecom Egypt has signed an agreement with Network Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: NSOL), the world's leading register of web addresses, through which the former will join the latter's International Premier Domain Registration Service Program. Moreover, NSOL pledged to use its UNI-CODE character system for domain name registration so that it may be used for Arabic character domain names in the future. This agreement marks the first of its kind in Africa and the Arab World.
