Update: Israel

1. Background

There have been a substantial increase in the number of domain names registered under the ccTLD IL (28%) and in the numbers of the Web sites in Israel (28%) in the months from September 1999 to January 2000. The updated statistics concerning domain names are brought in Tables 3 an 4 below.

A careful survey of our sources have not identified a reflection of this growth in the ESIS categories for Web sites. The growth of Web sites in Israel concentrates massively in the CO.IL top level domain and in the ORG.IL top level domain.

Top level domains like ac.il (academic), k12.il (schools), gov.il (government), muni.il (local authorities) do not indicate any substantial changes.

Main changes since the last Q3 WWW sites report

The Kishurim consortium for school networking announced a substantial increase in the number of schools that have established Web sites using the EduWeb system, they claim that 200 schools have established Web sites in recent months (http://www.e-du-web.co.il). This announcement rises the total estimate for primary and secondary schools web sites from 300 to 500 and the percentage in the population from 9.0% to 14.9%..

(1) The number of educational institutions is from the site of the program for educational networking of the Ministry of Education http://www.kishurim.k12.il David Carmi, the Marketing Director of Kishurim provided (30.3.2000) updated figures: 1008 schools connected, 85% of them by a fixed direct connection (Frame Relay) and the remaining either by ISDN to LAN (10) or by dial up. He claims that among them 200 schools have established Web sites using the EduWeb system developed by Kishurim. We get an estimate of the Web sites for schools (500) by adding the 200 of Kishurim to the number of Web sites of schools is that available at the National Site for Israel in Netdays Europe http://netdays.org.il (92) and visits to the main educational networks (Netschool (116), Keshev, Amalnet (37), ORT, Snunit (12), Tzafonet (20) and the file of Israeli schools available at http://www.jajz-ed.org.il(81) . The rough numer of 300 Web sites allows for duplications among the different sources.
