The SEPTI listed 571 national sites at the end of December 1999, and 811 sites at the end of December 2000, a seventy percent annual increase. Private initiatives continued to be more noticeable than publicly sponsored sites. Whereas the local and national administrative sites constitute six percent of the total, educational sites account for seven and one-half percent, and social and cultural sites eleven percent.
The major trends contributed to the growth of Moroccan sites in the last year :
Concerning the Internet, the price of telephone communications dropped steadily. ISP multiplied their offers following the introduction of Wanadoo (by the bias of Maroc Connect) and the offer of PC/Internet subscription packages (Maroc Connect, Maroc Télécom).
American multinationals, notably Orientation.com and Planetarabia have set up subsidiaries to develop the Moroccan Internet.
France Telecom continued its development in Morocco through its subsidiary "Maroc Connect". The French group channels its Wanadoo services through this subsidiary. The initial objectives of 100 000 subscriptions by the end of the year 2000 have apparently been surpassed.
Four continuing trends should contribute to the growth of Moroccan sites in the immediate future:
WAP technology continues to be popular with the press and it is now possible to receive several services. Casablanca stock market updates can now be obtained for free using a WAP telephone.
More specialised portals are now being published, including city portals (Casaguide), agricultural sites, import/export and a car dealership (Autotrade) :
