Update: FYR Macedonia

This report covers the whole period of the ESIS project surveying FYR Macedonia, October 1999 - January 2001 inclusive. 

* There are two Universities, University of Skopje and University of Bitola with 27 Faculties (14 of them have their own homepages) and 5 additional high schools.

2.1 Reduced number of Ministries from 21 to 14

The restructuring of the Government that took place in this period reduced the number of Ministries from 21 to 14. This fact should also be taken comparing the percentage of Web sites per total number of ministries.

2.2 Permanent increase of backbone capacity

The largest internet provider in Macedonia – Makedonski Telekomunikacii A.D. - permanently increases the capacity of international and domestic Internet links. The initial capacity of 256Kbit/s-satellite link, plus 128Kbit/s terrestrial link, now is increased to more than 16MBit/s.

2.3 Increase of Web sites in the Education sector and in regional and local authorities

Increased bandwidth of international Internet links, Construction of National Backbone - MTnet, and reduced prices for all Internet services, increase in the number of WEB sites, especially in the Education sector and in regional and local authorities (regions, departments/counties, municipalities). The increased number of Web sites in the Education sector is also result of OSIM’s (Open Society Institute – Macedonia) sponsorship.
