Update: Romania

The changes, associated to ESIS 2 categories, compared to previous period are mostly related to increasing number of web sites for universities. Also companies in the following fields IT solutions, Internet service providers, software and hardware vendors are significant increased the number of web sites. The main Internet service providers offer web hosting services and free e-mail accounts. Trading companies, industrial sector and theatres are also present with a significant number of web sites. Libraries, primary and secondary schools and hospitals/clinics seldom have web sites. Few commercial sites allow on-line payments by credit cards. We also found a significant number of new private (password required) web sites. A large number of web sites which where under construction at the previous report are still under construction.

On June 22, 2000 Ericsson promote in Romania the R320 WAP phone. WAP - Wireless Application Protocol - is the bridge between mobile communication and the Internet. With a mobile phone or a handheld PC that supports WAP one can book tickets, order a pizza, search for news, weather forecasts and stock exchange rates among others.

Every month the RIPE NCC coordinates the collection of data from the DNS zones of Top Level Domains (TLD's) in the RIPE Region and publishes summary statistics derived from this data. The total number of subdomains below ro top level domain counted in Romania increased from 4894 to 5933 between March 2000 and June 2000.

In the table bellow, we can see the evolution of the Romanian hosts.

We used the http://ftp.rnc.ro/cgi-bin/webhosts.ro page from June 2000 as a source for web hosts in .ro domain (page Made by Andrei Petrescu). The page contains only the web servers whose names start with www. There are 6310 such web servers. There are also some other web servers, but we believe that their number will not affect our statistics too much.

We can represent the Romanian web sites evolution according to the ESIS II WWW categories in the following graphic:

For this rapport we interrogated and classified the web sites, appeared after the last survey (March 2000), and the web sites which didn't respond or where under construction to March 2000 survey. This means a total number of 3302 web sites. From these 1523 are new web sites, 1416 didn't respond and 363 were under construction at the previous survey.

During the month of June, ESIS II ROMANIA team as a process of direct interrogation and classification of web sites obtained these figures.

We found 913 commercial / other category sites, 1608 didn't respond and 709 are under construction (not defined yet).

The terms SOA, COUNTED DUPL, REAL, CHANGE are explained below:

• SOA the number of delegated domains (zones) found below this top-level domain. In short this will be the number of subdomains below this top-level domain that run a separate nameserver.
• COUNTED the number of hosts (machines) found under this top level domain Hosts like "loopback", "localhost" etc are excluded from this number (in DNS terms, only A records are examined).
• DUPL the number of duplicate hosts (machines) found under this top-level domain. These are hosts that appear with more than one name, but with the same address (CNAME records are skipped automatically, and do not fall into this category)
• REAL the COUNTED number of machines minus the DUPL number of machines
