Update: Romania

The most important change was in number of web sites for high schools and universities followed by regional and local authorities.

We found companies registered with more than one www address, maximum was 282 addresses for the same company (site), one of those addresses is www.ifassurances.ro. This web address is an assurance Nordic company (If, the Nordic P & C insurance company established by Storebrand of Norway and Skandia of Sweden, - operate in Denmark, Norway and Sweden) and not a Romanian company. An important site is www.top100.ro which shows classified by categories the most voted sites from Romania, that is Romanian top 100. Almost every Romanian site asks you to vote them in Romanian top 100.

In July, the National Agency for Communication and Informatics launched its site www.anci.ro (under construction). This site presents information (in Romanian) about the Agency activities.

Like Internet portals, we found important Internet search engines and directories, like Lycos and Infospace, with web sites registered in .ro domain. Also Internet service providers have web sites which act like Internet portals. During the survey we found new 128 Internet service providers. ElcomSky company offers broadband, mass-consumer oriented "Internet via the Sky" through the Astra Satellite System. With this service users are able to gain access to broadband Internet via satellite.

We also found web sites which offer on-line shopping. Most of them allow only on-line command but few of them offer on-line payment through credit cards, see http://www.eshop.ro/ ; http://merchant.kappa.ro/ ; http://www.emania.ro/ .

Part of a two million EUR PHARE program, www.calita.ro is a new source of information for the Romanian food industry, launched by the EU center in Bucharest. The web site, which is supposed to be a rich source of information containing not only business opportunities but also legislation details is, unfortunately, still under construction and will not be fully effective until October this year. The site also represents the electronic version of three newspapers: "Actualites- CALITA," "Info-CALITA" and "Bulletin informatif CALITA."

British Medical Journal has launched its web site in Romanian at www.bmj.ro. The site mainly targets specialists with the latest medical discoveries and techniques. Legal consultancy Rokas and Partners has also launched its new site at www.rokas.com. It contains details about the company and its offices in the Balkans, including Bucharest, and an article on Internet piracy.

Every month the RIPE NCC coordinates the collection of data from the DNS zones of Top Level Domains (TLD's) in the RIPE Region and publishes summary statistics derived from those data. The total number of subdomains below ro top level domain counted in Romania increased from 5933 to 6696 between June 2000 and September 2000.

In the table below, we can see the evolution of the Romanian hosts.

We used the http://ftp.rnc.ro/cgi-bin/webhosts.ro page from June 2000 as a source for web hosts in .ro domain (page Made by Andrei Petrescu). The page contains only the web servers whose names start with www. There are 7258 such web servers. There are also some other web servers, but we believe that their number will not affect our statistics too much.

For this report we interrogated and classified the web sites, appeared after the last survey (June 2000), and the web sites which did not respond or where under construction to June 2000 survey. This means a total number of 4269 web sites. From these, 1952 are new web sites, 1608 did not respond and 709 were under construction at the previous survey.

During the month of September, ESIS II ROMANIA team as a process of direct interrogation and classification of web sites obtained these figures.

We found 1198 commercial / other category sites, 1993 did not respond and 1007 are under construction (not defined yet).

The terms SOA, COUNTED DUPL, REAL, CHANGE are explained below:

• SOA the number of delegated domains (zones) found below this top-level domain. In short this will be the number of subdomains below this top-level domain that run a separate nameserver.
• COUNTED the number of hosts (machines) found under this top level domain Hosts like "loopback", "localhost" etc are excluded from this number (in DNS terms, only A records are examined).
• DUPL the number of duplicate hosts (machines) found under this top-level domain. These are hosts that appear with more than one name, but with the same address (CNAME records are skipped automatically, and do not fall into this category)
• REAL the COUNTED number of machines minus the DUPL number of machines
