The Tunisian Government sees Information Technology as a means that will lead the country into The New Economy. Tunisia places great importance in being in the forefront of IT developments. The government has set certain objectives such as to guarantee a strong international presence for Tunisia, to support its competitiveness in the global market, and to protect its national identity. In order to achieve these objectives, the Tunisian government has begun developing its internal infrastructure through developing various sectors by incorporating IT technologies. From the table above, we see that the government has placed emphasis in developing its universities and National Ministries. More specifically, 33.3% of the High Schools and Universities have set up a website, however, this percentage remained the same over the last two years. Regarding National Ministries, we observe a full penetration in the first year, however there was a minor decrease during the last six months of 2000 due to some websites being reconstructed. Educational institutions and government ministries are being developed with IT technologies, thus indicative in the higher levels of website penetration, compared with other sectors.
Museums have the highest percentages in web penetration.
60 % of Museums have a website. Even though this is evident in the table above, we need to note that this figure remains the same for the last year and a half. This can be simply explained by the fact that the cultural sector is not considered as being a top priority sector for IT development in Tunisia. In summary, IT plays a key role in the development of Information Society within Tunisia. Many initiatives have been developed and implemented, primarily in the education and ministerial sectors. There exists a continuous effort to develop these, even though the cultural had been developed considerably at the start. This sector's developed was brought to a satisfactory level of development, thus indicating the stagnant penetration figures. In addition, we need to highlight that the statistical figures represented in the above tables are indicative of the public sector. The private is not taken into consideration. Therefore, the real picture occurring within Tunisia is not exclusively represented.
